Alaska Page 6 - Around Town

Thursday: Everyone had a great time at the party last night. Today, we decided to go into town and look around for some gifts to bring back home. Gil was looking for a wooden bowl for Linda. Froggy told us about a local, Roy Baldwin, who made wooden bowls and offered to lead us to his place. He also mentioned that Roy had a great collection of antique chainsaws.

As soon as we drove up I knew this was going to be another memorable experience. Chainsaw of every design imaginable lined his balcony and there were antique cars, trucks, tractors, and snowmobiles scattered around the yard.

Even the trees were full of chansaws.

Roy makes bowls and walking sticks out of burl such as this...

We went inside and found Roy at work in his shop.

Some of his work

I admired his shelves of antique chainsaws, some of which I had never seen anything like them. I drooled over the beautiful wooly mammoth tusk sitting on the floor but I couldn't take it with me.

We left Roy's place and went up the road to see a fellow who carves wooden figures with a chansaw.

The artist working on a moose head. He is darkening certain areas with a torch.

The finished work

Huk found a chair he liked but I don't think it will fit on the plane coming home.

I had to try it on for size too.

The wife warned me about this...

Finally revealed! The real Big Foot!

Huk has to leave us today to go teach a Kenpo seminar in Baltimore. He had just returned from a 3 week tour in Europe, came to Alaska, and now he flies home to New Orleans and then turns right around and flies to Baltimore. It makes me tire just to think about it.

Next: Back to fishing and my birthday.
