Alaska - Page 3 - HomerOn Tuesday, Gil and I took a trip about 100 miles south to Homer. The weather broke and we had a beautiful day with more breath taking scenery along the way.
It is so cool how you see clouds way up in the sky and then see a mountain peak sticking out above them.
Mt. Redoubt is the volcano that erupted last year causing a lot of problems for air traffic in the area.
Heading down the hill into Homer.
Here you can see the Homer Spit, The spit is a 4.5 mile long piece of land jutting out into Kachemak Bay. The Spit features the longest road into ocean waters in the entire world.
On the spit.
The world famous Salty Dawg Saloon.
It is tradition for people to sign their names on a dollar and stick it somewhere in the bar. The place is literally covered with dollars. I was told afterward that this is a favorite hangout for Jonathan Hillstrand of "Deadliest Catch" fame. I didn't notice him in there but I wasn't looking for him.
Commercial fishing boats and charter boats.
Some of the days catch of Halibut. The one on the left is a 175 pounder caught by a 14 year old girl. We didn't go out Halibut fishing.
On the way back to Sterling we saw some moose.
