Fox  - Daytona 500 Coverage

Today I watched the FOX coverage of the Daytona 500. They began their coverage at 1:00, approximately one and a half hours before the race actually started.  Their pre-race show could only have been worse if Dick Clark had produced it (maybe he did). Here's a tip for Fox, at the next race, send someone out to the stands to see who the fans are because you obviously don't have a clue. Maybe you are trying to attract a new crowd. If you do it at the expense of the long-time true racing fans, you are making a HUGE mistake.

Next, put somebody in charge who knows something about racing. NASCAR fans tune in to see racing, racing drivers, cars, and the stories behind the racers and cars. They do not tune in to see the incredibly boring and unrelated hour of crap the Fox chose to air.

Fox used the time to promote a movie. They staged a pitifully lame concert with such stellar acts as Brian Wilson (somebody please do him a favor and tell him it's over), Vanessa Williams (yawn), and a couple of country stars (ho-hum). They did a lot of fluff not remotely interesting or related to racing. There had been a whole week of racing and stories from the previous week leading up to the great race but you wouldn't have known from Fox.

Once they actually got into the race coverage, it wasn't too bad aside from far too many commercial breaks. I hope Fox hears enough from the viewers to learn from their mistakes. There are a lot changes going on in NASCAR racing, much of it I'm sure is driven by the television network.  NASCAR has a long history and some of the most loyal fans in sports. NASCAR racing is at it's highest popularity ever and rivals any professional sport in attendance and television audience. Apparently there are some producers and other executives who still have the attitude " Hey this thing is great! Lets change everything!" One again Fox, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
